Below are some links to transcripts of SGM teachings. As far as I know, the sound files for these messages have been removed, but they originally were available on various SGM church websites back in 2009. Using old-school dictation technology (supplied to me by a friend when her office was getting ready to toss obsolete equipment), I transcribed every word on every recording as exactly as possible. I am confident that the transcripts are accurate representations of what could be heard on the sound files.
In light of the October 2012 lawsuit, probably the most instructive transcripts to read are the ones from the 2009 Sovereign Grace Ministries pastors’ conference, “The Pastor and the Counseling Process.” In recent times, it can be common for leaders to assure members that biases against the mental health profession and outside (non-pastoral) help are a thing of the distant past, long repented of and put behind them. Yet just three short years ago, pastors were clearly being taught to do such things as make themselves part of a member’s decisions about psychiatric medications. Moreover, with the talk of a pastor’s needing to wear his “poker face” when dealing with a member who lets it slip that she is seeking help from a non-SGM professional Christian counselor, it is also obvious that pastors still believe that the counsel they provide is superior to that of outsiders.
Can such a deep-seated distrust of the mental health profession and outside help really be done away with in just a couple of years? If so, where are the sound files of the training for pastors where they were taught the new ideas (and untaught the old ones)?
Anyway, here are the links to the transcripts:
