Amended Lawsuit
January 14, 2013 in Sovereign Grace Ministries
You can read the original lawsuit here.
For those of you who are new to the site and are interested in understanding some of the assumptions and the mindset that could cause leaders to behave in ways described in the lawsuit’s allegations, this post from 2011 does a good job of connecting the dots.
What follows are some of the portions that reflect the changes in Friday’s amended filing.
Paula Poe is a female who was repeatedly sexually assaulted during her childhood at the School at CLC and at various church events convened in Maryland. Due to the nature of the lawsuit, she wishes to use the pseudonym Paula Poe to keep her identity confidential. Paula Poe brings this action on her own behalf and on behalf of those similarly situated.
FACTS REGARDING PAULA POE
Paula Poe attended the School and services at CLC beginning in kindergarten until her family moved away from Gaithersburg, Maryland. Paula Poe was repeatedly sexually assaulted by two men. The primary perpetrator was a pastor and teacher. The secondary perpetrator was a children’s ministry worker.
On multiple occasions, the two perpetrators, acting in concert, had Poe strip, and sexually molested her. These sexual molestations occurred on the School and Church premises, and at Church events, such as picnics.
On multiple occasions, the primary perpetrator sexually molested Paula Poe at the School and Church events.
On one occasion, the secondary perpetrator sexually molested Paula Poe outdoors during a Church picnic.
Upon information and belief, Paula Poe was not the only victim of this pedophilia ring operating within the School and Church.
Upon information and belief, the pedophilia ring’s victims included children who subsequently went on to prey upon other young children.
—————————–
Carla Coe is a female who was repeatedly abused by Defendant Tomzcak, primarily in Maryland and Virginia. Due to the nature of the lawsuit, she wishes to use the pseudonym Carla Coe to keep her identity confidential. Carla Coe brings this action on her behalf and on behalf of those similarly situated.
FACTS REGARDING CARLA COE
Carla Coe was repeatedly assaulted by Defendant Tomczak and his co-conspirators during a 25-year period spanning her childhood and young adulthood. Defendant Tomczak assaulted Carla Coe with his hands, as well as with various instruments, including but not limited to, plastic and wooden sticks.
On multiple occasions, including occasions after Carla Coe reached the age of majority, Defendant Tomczak forced Karla Coe to strip out of her clothing against her will, and be beaten on her bare buttocks. Defendant Tomczak continued to engage in this forced undressing and beating of Carla Coe until she fled and escaped from the abuse.
On several occasions, Defendant Tomczak imprisoned Carla Coe and denied her food for extended periods of time.
Defendant Tomczak verbally admitted on one or more occasions to the individual Defendants and to the Church that he abused Carla Coe. No one reported the beatings to the secular authority.
The assaults by Defendant Tomczak and his co-conspirators’ assaults primarily occurred in Maryland and Virgina.
—————————–
Grace Goe is as female who, along with her siblings, was repeatedly abused by her father while residing in Maryland. When she sought assistance from Defendants to stop the ongoing physical and sexual abuse, they failed to assist the girls, failed to report the ongoing abuse to the secular authorities, and instead alerted the abuser to his daughters’ please for aid. Due to the nature of the lawsuit, she wishes to use the pseudonym Grace Goe to keep her identity confidential. Grace Goe brings this action on her own behalf and on behalf of those similarly situated.
FACTS REGARDING GRACE GOE
Grace Goe was physically and sexually abused by her father when she was a minor and living in Maryland. Grace Goe’s father repeatedly beat her on her naked buttocks so harshly that she bled and bruised. Her father would then submerge her into an ice bath to hide the physical manifestations of the beatings.
Grace Goe’s father also repeatedly sexually abused her, making her rub his feet, which he then inserted into her vagina.
Grace Goe’s father engaged in the physical and sexual abuse toward the other children, including the male children, whose penises he repeatedly fondled.
Grace Goe and her older female sibling reported the fact of the abuse to Defendant CLC, seeking protection from their father. Grace Goe and her sibling met with Defendants Ricucci and Layman, and explained the severity of the abuse.
Rather than report the ongoing abuse to the secular authorities, Defendants informed the father that his children had reported the abuse. This led to further abuse by the father.
—————————–
Karen Koe and Karl Koe are brother and sister, both of whom were sexually assaulted as children residing in Virginia. Due to the nature of the lawsuit, they wish to use the pseudonyms Karen Koe and Karl Koe to keep their identities confidential. They bring this action on their own behalf and on behalf of those similarly situated.
FACTS REGARDING KARL KOE
Karl Koe was seven years old when he was repeatedly sexually molested (approximately ten times) by the male son of a Church pastor.
The perpetrator (then aged approximately 12 or 13) molested Karl Koe in multiple locations, including the bathroom at Church. The perpetrator engaged in multiple unwanted sexual acts, including kissing Karl Koe and fondling his penis.
After Karl Koe informed his parents that he had been molested, his parents advised Defendants Ecelbarger, Gallo, Mullery and V. Hinders, as well as others, of the molestation. Defendants failed to report the molestation to the secular authorities. Defendant V. Hinders misrepresented to the parents of Karl Koe that the Church had taken care of the matter by requiring the perpetrator to attend a different church service than Karl Koe.
Defendants, including the pastor father of the predator, failed to take any steps whatsoever to prevent the juvenile sexual predator from preying upon other children. Defendants continued to permit the juvenile sexual predator to have unfettered access to children on Church premises and during Church activities, such as Home Group and Celebration.
Upon information and belief, the juvenile perpetrator may have been one of the victims of the pedophilia ring operating at the School prior to sexually molesting Karl Koe.
FACTS REGARDING KAREN KOE
Karen Koe was sexually molested by a juvenile sexual predator when she was eight years old.
Karen Koe did not tell her parents about the molestation until some years later. At that point, her parents alerted Defendants and also alerted the police.
Karen Koe’s parents learned that the juvenile sexual predator who had molested their daughter had been initially charged with raping a minor, and subsequently served time in juvenile detention. Although this fact was known to Defendants, they permitted the juvenile sexual predator unfettered access to children.
Defendants refused to cooperate with the prosecuting secular authorities, who successfully prosecuted and convicted the juvenile sexual predator on felony charges. Defendant Gallo took steps to obstruct justice, including but not limited to making misrepresentations.
EDITED TO ADD: IF YOU WISH TO JOIN THE CONVERSATION BY LEAVING A COMMENT, PLEASE REFRAIN FROM SPECULATING ABOUT THE IDENTITIES OF THE VICTIMS. COMMENTS CONTAINING SUCH SPECULATION WILL BE DELETED. THANK YOU FOR HONORING THIS REQUEST.

#21-Great! Another pseudo-sin to add to the list of things we can be chastised for: being overly curious!
#44 Larry has two daughters-one biological and another adopted from Korea (I think). Although it makes sense that this would refer to his child, the timeline seems off if most of the abuse happened in MD and VA. His daughters were no more than 13-15ish when they moved from Fairfax to Atlanta, and it says the abuse occured over a 25 year period and continued after she reached majority. But strip-spanking an adult child even ONCE would be more than enough for her to flee.
Despite how spanking was trumpeted as the best thing you could do for a child, I never once heard ANY mention of undressing first. Something perverted was surely going on, as the mothers were not named in the suit and I am sure they did their share of spanking. Speaking of mothers-where were the mothers as their daughters were forced to strip and bend over to get the rod?
I am concerned about my family members as well as the children of my many friends who attend there. Could there have been other victims that did not report? Was this on church property? Were the perpetrators in any form of leadership? Did they have access to children after that? That is what concerns me.
Sorry, I misquoted, said, God’s mercy is greater than His wrath. It is greater than His judgment. Bullies are always cowards inside. No surprise to me that the leadership fled for the hills. But I have just as little or less respect for the celebs who are remaining silent. As Quizzler quoted on the previous thread, silence in these cases is assent.
Gosh, after reading the complaint again it occurs to me that there will be some rude awakenings for some when “misunderstood,” “misapplied,” “well-intentioned,” “could have done better,” and “wouldn’t have served” aren’t met with wide eyed, docile approval by people like attorneys, judges, and victims.
Also, it is really hard to get your story straight when you’re used to being able to make it up.
I noticed that Larry T was mentioned and quoted in the Courier-Journal article:
I’m curious how that works, when one set of allegations in the Amended Filing is specifically about Larry T himself. Doesn’t he have to respond to the complaint in some fashion, rather than just move to have his name removed? It sounds like Carla Coe’s entire experience was at Larry’s own hands, and not some generic church entity.
QE2 said, “But strip-spanking an adult child even ONCE would be more than enough for her to flee.”
QE2, if you are being abused in the name of God and being told that for you to flee is sin and that God WANTS you to be strip beaten, and if you are wanting to serve God with all of your heart, then you will NOT flee.
Kris #105
I noticed that as well. It seemed like Larry was responding the original suit and was not aware of the details in the amended suit.
Yes Lily……silence is consent
How many pastors and members have remained silent over the years; and in doing so, have allowed this evil predation to continue…..possibly even to this day.
To them I say……………is The Holy Spirit speaking to you right now?………..do you need to speak out?……to help stop this evil?
N.S.L.B.
N.V.L.B.
Kris,
The amended complaint changes things for Larry, and yes he does have to respond to all the allegations point by point. He could,
through his attorney, still ask that he be removed, not sure that would get very far. All the defendants filled a motion a few days ago asking for more time to respond to the primary and amended allegations.
BTW – It will be interesting to see how many current CLC pastors are left at CLC the end of the year.
Stunned said,
That’s the piece of this that I hope people can understand.
I know that one response to many of the allegations has been amazement over the fact that parents would actually allow themselves to be influenced by “mere advice” given to them by pastors, allow themselves to be dissuaded from reporting abuse simply because their pastors told them not to. In one respect, I can sort of understand where these people are coming from. It’s easy to think that parents should just have shrugged off whatever “counsel” they got from clergy and pushed ahead to do what they knew to be right.
But SGM spent years and years indoctrinating people into a mindset that equated pastoral counsel with the very words of God. Moreover, SGM’s culture was such that secular authorities like law enforcement and the court system were regarded as actively working against Christians and the Christian faith. Therefore, to defy a pastor’s counsel was not just ignoring advice from some well-meaning but casual acquaintance. Rather, it was turning one’s back on what God wanted one to do. It was choosing to ditch one’s Christian faith by embracing “the world” over “scriptural counsel.”
SGMers were conditioned for years and years to believe that if they were going to be real, true Christians, they would live by a higher standard, where they would accept the “hard words” even if it meant that they’d suffer.
So for a parent to choose calling the cops even after a pastor tells him not to – that’s tantamount, in the SGM world, to turning his back on his faith.
Stunned, I am just trying to figure this one out. If it is a daughter (and why else would he be spanking someone for 25 years?) and the abuse primarily happened in MD and VA, then abuse after turning 18 would have taken place in Atlanta. But it was not a majority of the abuse, yet the strip spankings continued until she fled the home?
Upon considering your post- that she loves God and had been beaten into submission (both physically and emotionally)-I could see that happening with the adopted one. Larry and Doris often said that she was so sweet and servant like and would tell them she would never move out but would always live with them and take care of them. The bio daughter seemed to have more “attitude” and the impression I got was that she was not cheerfully going along with the program. But these are just my impressions from their time in Fairfax. They only hobnobbed with the inner circle, so I really did not know them. Once Larry said hello as he was passing me in the hall…
These allegations are disturbingly graphic and horrifying. My heart breaks for the victims. I pray that they would continue to have courage.I also feel saddened for the sheeple who are oblivious to the storm coming their way. What happens when they see this mess spread across the news? I pray that they would learn to put their faith in God and not SGM or a way of doing things. I believe that healing will eventually come. Right now we have opened wounds.
What Kris said.
I don’t see where Larry is mentioned. Isn’t this Justin T.?
We never had a church picnic. Sounds like someone who never even went there.
Jay #114
The suit states:
4. Carla Coe is a female who was repeatedly abused by Defendant Tomczak, primarily in Maryland and Virginia. Due to the nature of the lawsuit, she wished to use the pseudonym Carla Coe to keep her identity confidential. Carla Coe brings this action on her behalf of those similarly situated.
“Defendant Tomczak” is Larry. No other Tomczak is listed as a defendant.
SMP, if you want to relay any requested info through Kris, that would be fine. I don’t need to know who you are and you don’t need to know who my family members are.
QE2, this whole thing is so hard to believe, isn’t it? It’s hard to wrap my head around all of this.
If it is helpful, if what you are saying is correct regarding the daughters of the T’s being around 15ish when they moved south, then doing the math, 15 out of 25 years living in VA/MD would be considered most (or the majority at least) of the 25 years of abuse that one of them claims to have suffered. Maybe that is what the lawsuit is saying?
Either way, it’s pretty horrific to imagine that so many of us actually wanted to be taught how to parent from some of these guys. If only we would have known their own backgrounds, rather than believing that Guy A would keep Guy B accountable. Who knew that one would use the other’s dirty laundry, involving small children nonetheless, in a filthy power scheme.
The horror of it all — my blood ran cold reading the first two lines, and then it got even worse.
After seeing this, and knowing that the leadership KNEW — no wonder they spent all their time talking about indwelling sin. They knew these things happened, yet didn’t want to confront them head-on. Sadly, they didn’t realize that hitting perpetrators over the head with the indwelling sin hammer would not help victims or cure the criminals. God provided legal avenues to follow, but maybe they thought some kind of trumped-up super-spiritual indwelling-sin-talk would somehow root out these horrific behaviors. It didn’t happen, and what a mess. In 81, Kris mentioned the similarity in stories. Because of the potential large numbers that are out there, I wouldn’t even begin to draw lines from one to another at this point. I hope every single victim of any SGM wrong-doing will come forward.
God have mercy on us all — oh Lord, bless these victims, bless them and heal their wounds, bind up their sorrows, help us to know how to help, in Jesus name. Amen, amen, amen, and amen.
Jay,
If you look at the list of defendants, you will see Larry T listed, not Justin T.
Are you saying that in all the years of CLC from the very start to the present time, there has never been one church picnic? I find that hard to believe. Have you truly been there since day one?
Kris said: So for a parent to choose calling the cops even after a pastor tells him not to — that’s tantamount, in the SGM world, to turning his back on his faith.
Exactly, Kris. Page 20, Entry 94 reads:
“After Robin Roe’s mother refused to acquiesce in Defendants’ attempt to obstruct justice, Defendants dropped all pretense of support, and expelled the family from the Church. Defendants also effectively expelled the family from school by denying them the reduced tuition that the family had received for over ten years. Defendants told Robin Roe’s mother that the family’s financial destitution was self-induced because she was refusing to cooperate.”
So, basically, church leaders disciplined the victim’s family for usurping their whacked-out authority. Can you imagine? This family was already victimized by the sexual abuse, then the church leaders by expelling them labeled them as in rebellion for refusal to heed their demands. You don’t read the word “sin” here, but we know the environment. Robin Roe’s family was in sin for not obeying their church leaders. This is absolutely sick.
Jay – Larry Tomczak was on the original complaint. He is still listed on the amended complaint and no other Tomczak is listed. I have the amended complaint printed out and it’s right next to me as I just used it for the above comment.
Here is the complete list of defendants (asterisks are shown by people/institutions newly added with this amended lawsuit):
Sovereign Grace Ministries, Inc.
*Covenant Life Church, Inc.
*Covenant Life School, Inc.
*Sovereign Grace Church of Fairfax
CJ Mahaney
Gary Ricucci
David Hinders
Louis Gallo
Frank Ecelbarger
John Loftness
*Grant Layman
Lawrence Tomczak
*Mark Mullery
Vince Hinders
Okay, never mind, I see he is named at the top. But, In several decades, never heard of a picnic, there.
I will never be a parent but I am currently horrified that it is possible that men knew about a child being abused and did not act in a God honoring manly way. God does not give men the spirit of cowardness. EVEN if ( as I myslef do not know all the facts ) the abuse was perceived a Godly humble man would do what it takes for as long as it takes for the abuse or perception of abuse to end …..
Jay,
CLC had many church picnics. Are you referring to a different SGM church?
Jay, I attended a number of picnics at CLC — before the building, they were at Smokey Glen, but after we got the property and building, a yearly event at CLC. There were dunk tanks and game booths and more.
I knew the amended lawsuit was coming — but I’m just so sad for and so proud of the all of the survivors — thank you for coming forward — and so angry with the perps and their pastoral protectors.
Anne CLC 1986-2007
When it says VA I am wondering if that is also Richmond victims as I know of quite a few. It sickens me how much I knew from teen years on that I “trusted God” and “trusted my pastors” with. When I first left, and eyes started to open…I was so ashamed with what I stood by and accepted. And for the guys and girls I knew and watched suffer through all the garbage, manipulation and horror of sexual abuse…their faces are forever burned in my heart. If any of you from Richmond are reading this … It’s me Robyn from va beach and I am just so sorry. The indoctrination of Pastor Authority and trusting-the lack of care, compassion, understanding and dang justice you were all robbed of…I am so sorry. As a kid we were indoctrinated, as teens we spewed the teachings as adults our Holy Spirit had been silenced and blindness and acceptance were in place. Grateful to be free but am deeply saddened for my friends of old
Question: The current lawsuit is a civil suit, but I didn’t think there was a statue of limitations on child sexual abuse. Is there any talk of criminal charges being brought, as well there should be IF that’s the case? Just wondering.
It was a Labor Day picnic. I was at a bunch of them.
So, here we have new charges. Only God and those invovled know what is true and what is not, and hoepfully witnesses that can righfully condem or clear the accused. With each new revelation, however, it becomes more difficult to extend any benefit of the doubt to SGM.
Like Kraftig and Kris, I have serious concernes about SGM leaders to even discern what it will mean, “to thell the truth, the WHOLE truth, and nothing but the truth” when they testify. I wonder who will be the first to perjure themselves?
#126 Mark of the Lion,
I know that you heroically tried to draw attention to the sins committed in Richmond, but CJ and the crew were not interested.
More importantly, God knows.
Whether or not these allegations are true, SG Ministries cannot survive the stigma of them in the long run. The shadow cast by the organization is now too long for any local SG church to escape. Justly or not, the end has come.
The greater concern is now this: will the reformed continuationist movement suffer at the fall of SG? This would be regrettable indeed.
I am emotionally conflicted. My heart breaks for yet, more victims, while at the same time I feel so frustrated with those who continue to attend SGM churches and believe they have no culpability in the matters before them. If you are currently attending a SGM church then you are not neutral. You have made a decision that directly affects whether or not SGM will continue to adhere to and exercise the abusive polity structure that got them in this mess in the first place.
By your very attendance you are vicariously affirming and supporting the fundamental reason why this insidious abuse gained a foothold in the lives of so many. The reason being, ….. a very unbiblical and ungodly use of spiritual authority by leaders in SGM. This remains the fundamental component as to why men who lead in SGM feel no compulsion to be beholden to you, your brother/sister, the police, child protective services, or the entire body of Christ in your locale. Because they believe the authority of Christ rests upon them to lord over the flock of God as they see fit, without accountability…. and so they do.
It is very critical to connect the dots that ultimately lead to the atrocities which have been noted ad nauseum. These abuses happened because SGM pastors/leaders believed they had ultimate authority over individuals in particular and entire churches in general. Make no mistake, they continue to believe it today and have no intention of changing (see SGM’s current polity statement).
SGM has just recently solidified and codified their “new and improved” polity statement, one that continues to grant them absolute and final authority over you and your church. This is the height of arrogance! Practically, this means, as it did in every one of these cases of abuse, that they wield ultimate authority in the affairs of individual lives and churches. People of SGM…. NOTHING HAS CHANGED!
Therefore, if you (members of SGM) continue to give your money and attend your SGM church, you are vicariously supporting the continued existence of SGM. You may have chosen to ignore all the drama which has occurred over the past 5-7 years while your other brothers and sisters were sounding an alarm, but this does not absolve you from your responsibility before God to demand that this nonsense cease. Your indecision, apathy, and lack of indignation regarding what has happened to your fellow brothers and sisters in Christ continues to be incomprehensible. Whether you like it or not, you are active participants in the propagation of the abuse of authority that results in the horror stories you have read here.
Your leaders have recently come to you and TOLD you they are signing the new polity document. Unless you raise your voice and communicate a loud resounding “NO”, this ungodly and heretical abuse of authority will continue unabated. …. and it will continue on your watch, because you said nothing and did nothing to challenge it.
I say the following without malice but with much dismay and grief in my heart. Either you (current member of SGM) are very deceived or paralyzed by cowardice. However, there is another choice….. to be brave and courageous, to stand up and allow your heart to be filled with the indignation and grief of God,….. to love your leaders and fellow brothers and sisters by speaking up and saying ENOUGH! This is wrong!
After all, it is our responsibility, as the body of Jesus Christ, to do so. He has given such weighty and awesome responsibility to no other, save (except) the church, the body of Christ, the pillar and foundation of the truth. Let’s act like it.
Oh, no..oh, no….the references by Mark of the Lion, #126, and Jim’s reply at #130 have me reeling. I was aware of three incidents in the Richmond church that were handled decently, but have no idea what this is referring to. I hope that Mark of the Lion or any victims will go now and report to proper authorities and/or contact the lawyer of the lawsuit.
Meanwhile, a Richmond perpetrator is scheduled to be released from his 20-year prison sentence on 1-29-2013, according to the Virginia Inmate Locator website. Are there possibly more offenses committed by this convict or other criminals that have not yet come to justice? Please speak up. I have been told by someone in a legal office that there is no statute of limitations on sexual abuse in Virginia.
Jim-thank you but I should’ve tried more
Nickname- to go into detail on a public forum I am uncomfortable with since I gave my name. However, if the mediator is comfortable, I give them permission to email you my personal email address. If you were in the Richmond church we may have met
@ Athanasius, the “greater concern,” eh? I think the reformed continuationist movement, in the greater scheme of things, is worth about as much as any given bowel movement. Jesus had very strong words against those who cause little ones to stumble, and that failure here is of much more importance than some particular doctrinal emphasis.
And Mark of the Lion (I like that avatar–it suits you), you are one of the more courageous women I have met, and your life testifies to the real power of Jesus. Thank you for speaking up and being bold even in the face of ungodly opposition.
Does anyone know what type of abuse CJ suffered from his father? If it was sexual abuse, sad as that would be, it might shed some light, although I am not saying that he was one of the predators. It is not coincidental that one of the defendants, who was molested at an early age, repeated the behavior toward other children later on. An evil, vicious circle. Such pain and suffering inflicted, yet pedophiles actually believe they are being kind and loving to their victims.
Shoot, I keep losing posts, I think because blog traffic must be at an all time high!
So, for the third time, Mark of the Lion — thank you. I’ve emailed Kris to ask for your address, and you will hear from me as soon as I receive it. Thank you.
And, Asthanasius, there are plenty of reformed continuists who’ve never heard of SGM, who continue to proclaim Jesus Christ and live out his commands before this dark and hurting world. I hope you were being facetious when you mentioned the “greater concern.” Surely, there is no greater concern than the purity of the Bride of Christ and the assurance that the Church is pure, holy, blameless, a safe, nurturing place for all God’s chillun.
I keep reading comments where people are shocked and can’t believe that his horrific abuse occurred. Hello? This doesn’t surprise me IN THE LEAST. In an environment where multiple types of abuse occurred regularly, it is no shock that sexual abuse was also on the list. In an extremely patriarchal environment such as SGM
and its “family of churches” where women and children are “less than”, it is very common for sexual abuse to be rampant. Be assured that there was much more of this going on than has been made public.
than”, this
Sorry for typos….on my iPhone.
Mark of the Lion, We too, could have done more. We could have demanded answers instead of thinking they would have really cared and investigated.— I also know that you, as Jim stated (thankyou, Jim) brought facts and events to SGM leadership. However Mahaney and leaders chose NOT to get to the root of these facts. They chose to NOT seek restitution and healing for the mauled young ones under their own care. They chose NOT to “watch over their souls”, much less care about the horrific woundings.
We are deeply deeply grieved to hear these latest stories. Our hearts are for you “Poe”, “Coe”, “Goe” and “Koe”
God is bringing into the light of day, the duplicities, lies, wretched authority, manipulation, and perversions which have been insidious pillars — the SGM leadership, including Mahaney and the SGM Board.
Yes, God hears. And He sees. The King of Glory is fighting for redemption for His own.
The incident at MLC in 2004 was that with the kid who was impersonating a police officer?
I had not heard of any abuse or molestation with that. Apparently kept secret as well. This all is really sick I am horrified.
Lily, I do not know for a fact, but in the past have heard that CJ’s father was an alcoholic.
Kaz #123-I have posted this before, but I remember watching the news with my grandfather 20 years ago and hearing about a man who had not only sexually abused his girlfriend’s 3 year old son but beaten him into a coma. Pop said, “In my day, the men of the town would have chased him down the street and beaten him to a pulp, and the police would have stood to the side and waited for us to finish before carting him away.”
Where I grew up, the entire town knew which men were alcoholics, adulterers, and wife/child abusers. They were consistant and never tried to hide it. They and the rest of us knew exactly who and what they were.
Contrast this with SGM “men” who feel it is their God given right to rule their families like dictators, beat their children and possibly their wives into submission, and transfer the responsibility of controlling their lust to the women who must “protect the guy’s purity” by dressing modestly. Ugh.
As an FYI, at this link is the schedule and info of the case:
http://casesearch.courts.state.md.us/inquiry/inquiryDetail.jis?caseId=369721V&loc=68&detailLoc=MCCI
Looks like the first hearing, the scheduling hearing, is Friday. Thinking I might go by to some of these since I work next door. The deadline for additional parties to join is July 23.
Uriah –
Your #132 is very well-stated.
Every time someone comes out with something new affirming SGM – as that guy (too lazy to go back and look up who it was, but it was discussed here last week) did the other day, with his “Why I Need Overseers” drivel that explained why he agreed with the new polity statement – I always wonder if we are looking at the same reality.
Yes, I know that a dozen allegations of mishandling of abuse cases from 10 or 20 years ago might not seem like a big deal to someone who has jumped wholeheartedly onto the SGM love train and never personally experienced anything hinky (yet). But what the SGM fanboys are overlooking is that all these strikingly similar stories did not happen in a vacuum and, more importantly, the mindset that made them happen is still very much alive and well within SGM’s culture.
Also, for every experience that makes it into a lawsuit, there are dozens more that never see the light of day because they were less dramatically wrong and more ambiguous. The mindset of leadership, though, remains the same. These guys are still out there dispensing advice and weighing in with their opinions, and they still occupy (in SGM members’ minds) a higher office of believerhood, with God-ordained authority over members. I have no doubt SGM’s lawyers have been busily at work for at least a few years, crafting new policies about reporting abuse and the technicalities of what pastors should say when. But ultimately, the root problem – the belief that a pastor’s counsel and advice hold more weight than a professional’s, and that a pastor has a higher level of authority than law enforcement – hasn’t actually gone away. There probably won’t be situations coming out of SGM these days that will be as grievous as the ones from the 1990s and early 2000s, but that’s mostly because SGM has gotten smarter about how to hide what they really believe about their own authority.
The root beliefs that caused this mess haven’t really changed all that much. Otherwise, the “new” polity statement (with the oh-so-pompous title citing “Church Order”) would reflect the need for accountability that flows both ways.
Oh, and the washington post article is linked on the front page of the website now under top metro area headlines.
This is beyond horrifying. To you very brave victims, may God hold you tightly in this time and the Holy Spirit give you comfort and peace. I am sad to have ever been a part of this group of churches who are more concerned about protecting themselves than the victims of these horrific events.
And to those who are still in sgm but not in one of the named churches, you are condoning this in your silence. Spiritual abuse is going on in your location if only in its infancy. All this Shepherding movement authority and focus on indwelling sin is harming people. I wish that instead of protecting yourselves you could see how harmful your “system” can be especially to those who don’t yet have a full grasp on the Gospel. Children may be turned away from the faith because of this. Jesus spoke of being concerned over even one lost sheep. He would leave the 99 to get the one, if only that was the heart at sgm.
Mark of the Lion, in my eyes you did much to defend the defenseless.
I wonder if Mahaney’s blackmail of L Tomzack was related to the sexual allegations stated above in the ammended lawsuit? That is, is it possible Mahaney was referring to these “sins” in threatening Tomzack’s position within SGM?
One thought on speculating as to the victims’ identities…
“Due to the nature of the lawsuit, she wished to use the pseudonym Carla Coe to keep her identity confidential.”
There’s been some guessing about who might have been asked to strip before being beaten. Given the desire of the victim to keep her identity confidential, perhaps those public speculations should be avoided. I know some of those identities may appear to be very obvious, but if they didn’t want their names printed in the filing, they probably don’t want it made public here either.
As for Larry T. seeking to have his name removed, I suppose every named defendant will seek to do the same if it’s at all possible. Even if it’s a long shot, I’m sure it would be the counsel of any attorney so as to avoid liability.
Wounded, I believe that CJ Mahaney’s blackmail of Larry Tomczak was heavily related to sexual crimes. I do not believe that the crimes were committed by the elder Tomczak, however.
How (insert several curses here) CJ Mahaney could have been more concerned about wrestling power from his “friends” hands than the abuse victims make me sick to my stomach.
PS. CJ, paying off victims to remain silent does NOT constitute “caring” for the victims.
So at this point I think it’s clear that SGM is not “cult like” but an actual cult (although mild as cults go – meaning no murder, compound, or relo to south america, and much of the abuse was hidden instead of front and center like Manson, Jonestown, koresh.) when I watched “cults: dangerous dedication” on History I thought the only thing missing from SGM was this kind of serious physical abuse from the leaders. Now we see that was happening too. The ones who enabled it are just as morally guilty as LT.
LEADERSHIP collectively abused many little sheep through this joint effort of abuse and deception, even if only a couple did the actual physical abuse.
Anyone recall what josh said to CLC when this lawsuit first hit? I think his comments are worth revisiting in light of the new allegations, because I think i recall from here that he said it had nothing to do with CLC and never happened on school or church grounds. If so, simply another lie from the CLC pulpit and we can stop acting like Harris isn’t part of the problem. It was the “new, repentant josh” who said that only weeks ago.
The backpedal from josh on this will be dizzying.
